Though Skoda Fabia is based on the platform of Volkswagen Polo compact sedan car, Skoda both originally built it as hatchback and estate variants. Fabia’s first generation model was released in 2000 based on Volkswagen Group’s platform, which was followed by second-generation variant released in 2005 with improved exterior design in European markets. The Fabia gained success due to internal motor parts, which are developed by Volkswagen, but Skoda packages it attractively in a manner as to keep its price below Volkswagen’s models.
Presently there are four diesel and four petrol fuel variants of Skoda Fabia brought to India in 2008, which are priced between INR 6.5 to 10 lakhs and are available in beautiful colors of white, silver, beige, red and black. The Fabia 1.2 liter TDI Active Plus has displacement capacity of 1197 CC, is manufactured in Skoda’s Indian manufacturing unit, and can comfortably seat five adults. The Fabia failed to generate interest as its Octavia cousin and lack of dealer network.
Interior comforts – The car’s large dimensions ranging from length of 4000 mm and width of 1642mm creates ample legroom and headroom for its passengers who have been provided with adjustable headrests and interior lights for increased comfort. Power steering along with one touch locking and unlocking of doors and windows provide convenience to drivers. Besides these facilities, passengers are also given front ashtray, antiglare mirrors, cigarette lighter, parcel tray in rear side and illuminated glove box. Comfortable leather seats provide right kind of ambience within its luxurious interiors, which are blessed with air-conditioner and heater to maintain suitable temperature.
Exterior features – Skoda Fabia has been designed with Asian sensibilities in mind therefore has peripheral body cladding to protect its underside against uneven roads. Traditional black radiator grille is accentuated by chrome finished Skoda logo and flap about it while wing shaped headlights complete its picture of elegance. Bottom section of body colored bumper has crisscross grille covering air dam which is flanked by large fog lamps. Combination of roof rails, body colored handles and ORVMS followed by roof antenna and cap-rim like spoiler on rear windshield give the car a smart overall exterior. Simple tubeless 14-inch radial tyres with wheel covers have been provided for the Fabia 1.2 TDI Active Plus for elegant looks without cost escalation, while tinted glass on windows and rear windshield provides adequate privacy.
Engine Performance: The model was revised and launched in 2007 with 1.2 liter TDI turbo charged diesel engine, which is teamed with three cylinders and five-speed manual transmission for making it more fuel-efficient. Therefore, the Skoda Fabia provides mileage of nearly 15-20 kmpl and torque of 180 NM to make it suitable for both city and rural roads. Its DOHC valve mechanism manages direct injection of fuel therefore keeping the fuel cool. Its ventilated disc and drum brake system works in partnership with McPherson suspension struts along with triangular link and torsion based suspension system. Besides being fuel-efficient, the car also complies with emission levels of Bharat IV.
